-Getting to Know Jesus of Nazareth

For publication on The Depth of Perception

By Kevin Freeman

Because The Depth Of  Perception covers the Christian aspects of the spiritual disciplines, it is only appropriate that we also write about the life and teachings of Jesus Christ, who lived in the first century and was proclaimed to be the savior that was foretold in hundreds of prophecies – all of which he fulfilled – throughout ancient Jewish scripture.

Christian beliefs stem from the teachings of Jesus the Christ – which translates to “the anointed” in the Greek and “the messiah” in the Hebrew – and through his disciples as they spread his word throughout the world.

Christianity has been handed down to us through the generations of Christians that have lived since that time, but the roots of Christianity are most certainly Jewish and have been handed down to us since long before men had created the written word.

There is much debate, even among churches, about the life and teachings of Jesus of Nazareth, and these topics will be covered in depth as we continue in our studies at The Depth Of Perception. For now, at least, we will cover some of the basics to start from.

Jesus of Nazareth proclaimed himself to be the Christ and was affirmed by many of his followers who witnessed him perform many miracles such as spiritual healing, casting out of demons, and the raising of the dead. Jesus’ most important affirmation came from heaven itself in the form of the Spirit of God alighting on him as a dove.

Jesus followed Jewish laws and traditions, observed the Sabbath, taught in Jewish synagogues – basically Jewish churches – and began doing so in his early teen years. The Jewish teachers were amazed at his understanding of the scriptures and the wisdom that he possessed, allowing Jesus to travel to many synagogues.

After about 33 years of a life filled with miracles and teaching, Jesus submitted himself to the government authorities and his Jewish accusers who could not believe that he was the Christ. He was eventually tortured and executed with common Roman criminals on a large wooden cross, as was the custom of the time for the lower criminals.

Three days after he had been verified to be dead, the tomb containing the body of Christ, which was guarded by Roman soldiers, was found to be empty and Jesus began appearing to many people throughout the world. When he did so, he showed the holes in his hands and feet where the nails had gone through, and proved to many people that he was who he said he was.

Most of the scripture that we know today as the New Testament consists of Jesus’ disciples’ teachings and writings about the Christ and the messages that he had left for them to proclaim throughout the world. The body of Christ, according to the scriptures, served as the sacrifice that was necessary to pay for the sins of his followers and completely fulfill the Jewish law that had previously required regular sacrifices of various kinds.

I hope and pray that you will stick around as we cover the various aspects of the life and teachings of Jesus Christ here at The Depth Of Perception. We are covering many topics in many fields, but our ultimate goal is to attain the physical, mental, and spiritual health that only a combination of studies and disciplines can provide. God bless us all as we come to know Him and understand His love and purpose.
